Job Description

Position Description The City of Minneapolis is seeking an experienced Sustainability Program Coordinator focusing on the intersection of environmental justice and climate mitigation and resiliency. In this position you will work with city staff, community partners, businesses, and other organizations to mitigate and remediate harm caused by past and current negative environmental externalities and support the implementation of the Green Zone work plans. This position will collaborate with and support the development of resiliency hubs partners, the Minneapolis community air monitoring project, administrative support for the Northside and Southside Green Zones and the annual Green Zone Summit. You will develop and advocate for environmental justice solutions to achieve the City's sustainability and climate justice goals. This position requires strong facilitation, analytical, organizational, and communications skills as well as the ability to work independently and manage professional relationships both internally and externally. Work Location: This position may be eligible for flexible work arrangements, including hybrid work with some days working remotely and some days working in the office. The City of Minneapolis does not sponsor applicants for work visas. Job Duties and Responsibilities Promote environmental justice and equity through the implementation of the Climate Equity Plan. Support Northside and Southside Green Zone committees' meetings, programs, and projects, including the annual Green Zones Summit. Facilitate implementation of the Green Zone Work Plans. Create awareness for and promote resources available to Green Zone members, and partners that will benefit the community and support the Green Zones' work plans. Develop content for Green Zone website pages and develop educational materials in support of environmental justice. Manage the Green Zones annual environmental justice micro grants. Collaborate with city staff and community to increase awareness, engagement and education on the creation and implementation of programs to achieve environmental justice goals. Provide assistance and support efforts to develop resilience hubs. Manage and work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary project work teams on projects including drafting the project scope, scheduling meetings, completing tasks, facilitating meetings, garnering consensus on recommendations, and preparing reports/presentations. Prepare and make presentations to groups, residents, and elected officials. Act as a liaison with internal and external partners to create policies, promote sustainability and participate in community-wide sustainability projects. Participate in annual training and development. Collaborate and work with local and regional partners on environmental and climate equity programs and solutions. Working Conditions:Office and field Required Qualifications Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Sustainability, Physical Science, Natural Science, Biological Science, Urban Planning; or equivalent education/experience. Minimum Experience: Five years of professional experience, including working in sustainability, environmental management, environmental justice, outreach/community engagement, and/or climate change. Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Proven experience in racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse residents, organizations, and business. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in addressing the resolution of complex environmental and administrative issues. Demonstrated knowledge of environmental issues, including current trends and methods related to sustainability, environmental justice, best practices and technical expertise to address such issues. Ability to coordinate multiple projects at the same time and organize work to meet deadlines and conflicting priorities. Ability to plan and manage projects with multiple players and diverse issues. Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with staff, representatives of government/private sector, and general public. Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills. Strong oral and written communication skills. Strong presentation skills to a wide variety of audiences on environmental policy and issues. Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel and PowerPoint). Ability to understand policy implications of issues and make appropriate recommendations. Ability to creatively solve problems involving sensitive situations and issues. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. Preferred knowledge of contract and grant proposal preparation and management. Preferred knowledge of budget development and management.
